Seneca County Sheriff Timothy Thompson reports that on Monday, deputies and investigators responded to a two-vehicle personal injury crash at the intersection of State Route 96 and State Route 414.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, a Casella garbage truck driven by Fernando Cruz, 35, of Geneva, was traveling northbound on Route 96 when it collided with a Chevrolet Silverado operated by Anibal Berganza, 59, of Roslyn Heights. Berganza was attempting a left turn from Route 414 onto Route 96 and reportedly failed to yield to the garbage truck.

The front of the garbage truck struck the driver’s side of Berganza’s vehicle. Berganza became trapped and was extricated by fire department personnel before being flown to Upstate Medical Hospital by Mercy Flight. A female passenger, F. Pace-Berganza, 53, also of Roslyn Heights, sustained injuries and was flown to Upstate Medical Hospital by LifeNet. Cruz was uninjured but was checked by North Seneca Ambulance at the scene.

Both vehicles were heavily damaged and towed from the scene. A portion of Route 96 was closed for several hours while the Accident Reconstruction Team investigated.

Fire departments from Romulus, Ovid, Lodi, Interlaken, and Fayette assisted, along with the New York State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit. The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
