Following a series of close calls between pedestrians and e-bikes, the Skaneateles Police Department is reminding the public about laws regarding e-bikes.
Police reiterate that e-bike and e-scooter riders must be at least 16 years old, cannot operate on sidewalks, and cannot be used on roads with speed limits over 30 mph.
Non-electric bicycles may be operated on sidewalks, except in the downtown commercial district (Genesee and Jordan Streets) where they must be walked. Skateboarding is prohibited downtown.
Bicycles must have bells, and headlights must be used if riding one 1/2 hour before sunrise or after sunset. Helmets must be worn by those under the age of 14.
Riders are reminded to use caution when riding around pedestrians. Motorists should remain alert and respectful of cyclists, skateboarders, and pedestrians.
Police also urge parents to speak with their kids about these laws, as they could be held liable if their children are caught breaking cycling laws.
Police add that many of those operating these e-bikes and scooters appear to be youth.
