UPDATE: Cause of Seneca County Fire Determined

SHARE NOW

We have an update on the barn fire in Varick that drew a massive emergency response on Monday afternoon.

According to Seneca County Sheriff Tim Thompson, the fire was reported around 4:56 p.m. at 683 Hahnel Road. When first responders arrived, they found heavy black smoke and flames coming from the roof and windows of the barn.

Multiple fire departments from across the region assisted the Varick Fire Department, including Romulus, Interlaken, Lodi, Waterloo, Seneca Falls, Ovid, Fayette, and others. Several ambulance agencies also responded.

Firefighters were able to bring the blaze under control and prevent it from spreading to a nearby home and several smaller structures on the property. The barn, however, was a total loss.

Investigators determined the fire was caused by an electrical short in a barn fan. Crews remained on the scene for about seven hours for extinguishment and cleanup.

No injuries were reported.
