Common Loons are built for swimming and diving and occasionally get themselves into trouble when they inadvertently land along roadways and parking lots (especially after a rain), mistaking them for water. To assist them with their strong diving and swimming skills, their back legs are positioned far to the rear which makes walking on land for any distance nearly impossible.
With a little help from DEC ECO Johnston, this loon was quickly able to carry on with his day. DEC received a call of a distressed Common Loon at the Macedon Fire Department near lock 30 on the Erie Canal last Monday. ECO Johnston responded and upon his arrival did a quick assessment to ensure the loon was healthy.
All appeared to be well, and the loon was carried to the canal and released into the water where it rehydrated and rested before taking off.
