- History Happy Hour: A Brief History of Cultural Groups in Geneva – September 19 at Lake Drum Brewing from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. – Join Curator John Marks as he shares a captioned slide show of historical images and information about the various cultural groups that have called Geneva home. Come in any time, stay as long as you like! The images will run on a continuous loop.
- The Fox Sisters and Modern Spiritualism – September 22 at 2:00 pm at Rose Hill Mansion – Join Historic Geneva for our first fall program focused on death and mourning. Tracy Murphy, Director of Historic Palmyra’s 5 museums, will present a program on the Fox sisters and their communion with the spirit world. From their short stay in Hydesville to their seances in NYC, she will highlight the origin of spiritualism and the lives of those involved in it. The program is free and open to the public.
- Civil War Day – September 28 at Rose Hill Mansion from 10 am to 4 pm – Join the re-enactors of Reynold’s Battery for Civil War Day. The members of Reynolds’ Battery L 1st New York Light Artillery portray the Union troops servicing mounted firearms as well as civilians associated with the war effort. The reenactors will be stationed on the grounds to explain life in a Union camp and demonstrate activities of daily life. The first floor of Rose Hill will be open for a self-guided experience with staff on hand to answer questions about the house. The Carriage House Gift Shop and exhibits on site will be open during the event. The event is free and open to the public.
- Rose Hill is open for guided tours Tuesday through Saturday, 10 am to 4 pm, and Sunday, 12 to 4 pm. During September and October, the mansion will be dressed for mourning. Few families in the 19th century were spared serious illness and loss, including the Swans at Rose Hill. Their son Otis Swan died in September 1864 from rheumatic fever at only five years old. The mansion will be dressed in mourning for Otis.
