The Buffalo Sabres gave the region something to cheer about Thursday night, rallying past the Boston Bruins 3-1 to take a 2-1 lead in their NHL playoff series. Buffalo looked shaky early but found its footing and now controls the series heading into Game 4.
Up in Rochester, the Red Wings dropped a tight one to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, 6-5, in a game that came down to the wire. Rochester couldn’t hold on late, giving the RailRiders the one-run edge they needed.
In the majors, the Yankees swept Boston with a 4-2 win, pushing their winning streak to six games and improving to 16-9. Schlitter was credited with the victory — his second win against the Red Sox already this season. It’s a quality start to the year for New York. The Knicks, meanwhile, fell 109-108 to Atlanta, with CJ McCollum doing the damage again for the Hawks. New York now trails the series 2-1 and has to figure out how to slow McCollum down before things get more difficult. The Hawks improved to a 2-1 series lead despite entering as the lower seed.
