A 17-year-old snowmobile rider was killed Sunday afternoon in a crash on a private trail in the town of Warsaw.
New York State Police say troopers from the Warsaw barracks responded just after 12 p.m. to a reported snowmobile collision off Wilder Road. Investigators determined that 17-year-old Steven Gregorie, of Varysburg, was operating a 2012 Ski-Doo southbound on a marked trail when he lost control and struck a pile of logs, ejecting him from the machine.
A second rider, a 16-year-old friend operating a 2015 Arctic Cat behind Gregorie, also lost control, left the trail, and hit the same log pile. He was thrown from the snowmobile, which then came to rest on Gregorie.
Other riders in the area called 911 and assisted until first responders arrived.
Gregorie was taken by ambulance to Wyoming County Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy is scheduled through the Monroe County Medical Examiner’s Office.
The 16-year-old suffered minor injuries.
State Police say there are no signs of foul play.
