Work has begun on the $38 million project to enhance passenger experience at the Rochester Airport.
Governor Kath Hochul announced on Friday that construction is underway at the Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport.
During her announcement, she mentioned the airport’s namesake, famed writer and abolitionist Frederick Douglass, and the need to remind people of Upstate New York’s rich history.
“We have to continue to remind people what we have up in this area – not far from Seneca Falls. And leaders of the women’s rights movement started here – Susan B. Anthony. So, this is such a proud point for me to brag about. You don’t know how often I brag about this area when I’m elsewhere. So, we’re going to continue reminding people of this legacy, the stories and making connections smoother.” said Hochul.
The project will modernize the entranceway, ticketing, and baggage claim areas of the main terminal, making it more inviting and easier to navigate through more natural lighting, LED fixtures, and new signage.
The project was awarded $18 million from the Upstate Airport Economic Development and Revitalization Competition.
