Volunteer Fire Departments Eligible for New State Grant Funding

SHARE NOW

Volunteer fire departments across New York State can now apply for $25 million in capital grant funding to help upgrade fire stations, training facilities, and response equipment.

Governor Kathy Hochul announced the funding is available through the Volunteer Fire Infrastructure and Response Equipment Grant Program, with applications due by February 25, 2026. The program is administered by the State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services and awarded its first round of funding in October 2024 to 88 departments statewide.

“Our volunteer firefighters represent the very best of public service,” Hochul said in a statement, adding that investing in facilities and equipment helps strengthen community safety and resilience.

Of the total funding, $20 million is allocated for the construction, renovation, or purchase of fire service facilities. An additional $5 million is available for equipment purchases, including personal protective equipment, PPE washers and dryers, radios, and communications equipment, among other items.

State Homeland Security and Emergency Services Commissioner Jackie Bray said the program helps ensure volunteer departments have the infrastructure and tools needed to respond to emergencies as demand for services continues to increase.

Eligible applicants include villages, towns, cities, and fire districts that provide fire protection through departments made up entirely of volunteer firefighters, as well as nonprofit fire companies and counties or municipal shared services. Applicants must demonstrate eligibility as part of the application process.

More information about the grant program and application process is available through the State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services.
