(Update): Two teens were shot to death by an Onondaga County Sheriff’s deputy Wednesday morning.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, the teens were suspected to have been involved with the theft of two vehicles and burglarizing two smoke shops in the area.
The vehicles were reported stolen by six people around 9:00p Tuesday night from the area of James Street and Hixon Ave in Syracuse. They were later spotted at a smoke shop in the City of Oneida during the report of a burglary around 4:00a Wednesday.
After a second smoke shop burglary report in the DeWitt, a call came in around 6:15a about a suspicious vehicle on Danzig Ave.
When a deputy responded, they found both vehicles; one fled while the other attempted to run over the deputy, who then fired three shots into the vehicle.
The car then drove away but crashed on Mooney Ave shortly before 7:00a. At the scene of the crash, law enforcement found one occupant dead. A sergeant attempted to perform life-saving measures on a second occupant but to no avail.
A third occupant, believed to have been in the car, was not found at the crash site. The second vehicle and its occupants have yet to be located.
The identities of the two dead teens have not yet been confirmed.
The State Attorney General’s Office has opened an investigation into the incident.
