U.S. News Ranks NY Veterans Homes Among Top Facilities

Three New York State Veterans Homes have been recognized among the top nursing homes in the state, earning high marks from U.S. News & World Report for the quality of care they provide to residents.

The New York State Department of Health announced that the Veterans Homes in Batavia, Oxford and St. Albans each received U.S. News’ “High-Performing” designation — the highest level of recognition in the publication’s annual Best Nursing Homes rankings. The honor reflects outstanding performance in short-term rehabilitation, long-term care, or both.

Since launching in 2009, the U.S. News Best Nursing Homes analysis has served as a guide for families seeking trusted, data-based information when choosing care options for loved ones. Fewer than 19% of the more than 15,000 nursing homes evaluated nationwide earned the Best Nursing Homes distinction for 2026.

State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald said the recognition highlights the commitment of staff caring for veterans across the state.

“The recognition of our Veterans homes as among the best health care facilities in New York is a tremendous accomplishment,” McDonald said. “As a Navy veteran, I am deeply grateful knowing our veterans are in good hands. This achievement reflects the dedication of the staff who provide care and oversight every day.”

The facilities are operated by the State Department of Health and received strong ratings in areas including staffing levels, health outcomes and long-term care quality.

State officials also pointed to increased investments in nursing homes and long-term care statewide. Over the past four budgets, Governor Kathy Hochul has approved the largest Medicaid rate increases in two decades for hospitals, assisted living programs and nursing homes. The current Executive Budget proposal includes $750 million in additional funding to support hospital and nursing home services, along with workforce development initiatives such as tuition reimbursement, loan repayment and efforts to recruit more nurses, particularly in rural communities.

Ryan Ashe, director of the Health Department’s Division of Health Facilities Management, said the designation reflects the mission of the Veterans Homes.

“We are very proud of the staff in all of the Department’s Veterans Homes who make high-quality care and exceptional quality of life a reality for the residents and patients,” Ashe said.

Larry Piselli, administrator of the Batavia Veterans Home, called the recognition a testament to staff dedication.

“This distinction reflects the professionalism and compassion our team demonstrates every day in service to those who have served our nation,” he said.
