Two corrections officers were injured last month in Elmira when an incarcerated individual attempted to steal an officer’s handgun.
According to NYSCOPBA, the union representing corrections officers, the incident happened on October 25 at the emergency room of Arnot Ogden Medical Center. After receiving treatment, two officers approached the individual to apply restraints prior to transportation back to the Elmira Correctional Facility. The inmate then quickly grabbed one of the officer’s handgun, attempting to remove it from the holster while shoving the second officer away.
The individual was placed in a body hold and forced onto the emergency room bed; however, he continued to struggle with officers.
After being transported back to the facility, the inmate refused to exit the van. The inmate was forced out of the van and taken to the prison’s infirmary. Once in the infirmary, the inmate became compliant.
The officers sustained neck, shoulder, and back injuries. Both were treated by medical staff at the facility.
The inmate is serving a four-year sentence for assault after being convicted in Clinton County in 2024. The 28-year-old had previously been convicted in 2019 for disseminating indecent material to a minor.
