Trooper Involved Shooting in Sullivan County Under Investigation

One man is dead as a trooper-involved shooting is under investigation in Sullivan County.

According to state police, troopers were engaged in a vehicle pursuit on Rock Hill Drive in the Town of Thompson just before 2:30a on Tuesday. The vehicle’s driver, 32-year-old Albert Melendez of Middletown, attempted to turn around at the intersection of Rock Hill Drive and Emerald Place.

Trooper Russel Peters exited his patrol vehicle and commanded Melendez to stop his vehicle; however, Melendez continued forward making contact with the trooper who then shot Melendez.

Troopers provided emergency medical care to Melendez, who was taken to Garnet Health Medical Center where he died.

Peters was also treated at Garnet Health for minor injuries and released.

The shooting is currently under investigation by the New York State Attorney General’s Office with assistance from state police.
