Municipalities, organizations, private entities, and individuals that plant trees are all contributing to meeting the state’s goal of planting 25 million trees by 2033. A new webpage and interactive tracking tool are available to help document progress. Developed by DEC in cooperation with the Office of Information Technology Services, the webpage and Tree Tracker allow reporting of the location and number of trees planted. The webpage also includes listings of tree planting events, information about tree planting, and links to funding opportunities.
Why plant 25 million trees in New York? The DEC said tree planting is a key strategy to help slow climate change and make communities more resilient to challenges such as extreme heat, air pollution, and severe weather. Trees capture and store carbon in their leaves, roots, and trunks and offer ecological benefits such as providing wildlife habitat and naturally filtering air and water. .
