A Syracuse man is charged with assault after he allegedly struck a State Trooper with his car.

On May 26, 2024, at approximately 10:12 a.m., Trooper John Zayas Jr. was engaging in an Occupant Safety Checkpoint at East Calthrop Avenue, and Interstate 81 northbound ramp in the city of Syracuse.

Trooper Zayas observed the operator of a motor vehicle on his cell phone and asked him to pull over. The operator refused to comply and fled the scene, striking Trooper Zayas with their driver-side door. Trooper Zayas fell to the ground, causing injury to his right hand and arm. The vehicle was identified by plate number and located at the registered address at 3000 Midland Ave Syracuse, New York.

Troopers were able to identify the operator as 26-year-old Mekhl Flagg. Flagg was arrested and charged with DWAI Drugs, Assault 2nd degree, and Reckless Endangerment 1st degree.

Flagg was transported to the Onondaga County Justice Center for arraignment
