Just over 1,200 applicants attended a Trooper Candidate Processing event held last weekend at the New York State Police Academy in Albany.
The event was the next step for applicants to become a State Trooper after taking the Entrance Exam. During processing weekend, candidates were tested for physical fitness, vision, and hearing, medical and psychological requirements.
After successful candidates meet each requirement of processing weekend, including a background investigation, candidates will then receive a Conditional Offer of Appointment to the position of New York State Trooper. In addition to the Albany Academy, the New York State Police launched another Academy in Cazenovia, in October which provides the ability to hold multiple classes a year.
During this most recent processing, New York State Police saw an increase in female and minority candidates compared to the last processing weekend. The number of female candidates increased by 30%, the number of Black candidates increased by 35%, and the number of Hispanic candidates increased by 13%. In March of 2022, the New York State Police took the 30 X 30 pledge to increase the representation of women in New York State Police classes to 30% by 2030.
State Police are now accepting applications for the 2024 Trooper Entrance Examination. Applications close on March 4th and individuals can take the test through March 17th. During the Academy, minimum compensation is $64,346, and after one year, $98,300 – $109,000 (certain geographical areas receive additional location pay.
