The New York State Police have introduced the Autism Awareness – Visor Card Program, a new initiative aimed at improving interactions between law enforcement officers and individuals on the autism spectrum.
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) affects an estimated one in 45 adults in the United States and can present challenges with communication, social interaction, and sensitivity to lights, sounds, or smells. These differences can make encounters with law enforcement more difficult, potentially leading to misunderstandings.
The new visor cards feature simple visual icons that troopers can use to communicate more effectively, helping reduce confusion or fear during interactions. Every patrol vehicle will be equipped with a card, and members of the public can also download and print the card from the New York State Police website.
The program will be rolled out statewide in the coming weeks.
