The New York State Police conducted a targeted traffic enforcement operation along the Thruway on Thursday, focusing on unsafe driving behaviors and commercial vehicle safety.

Troopers assigned to Troop T stepped up patrols and inspections following several large crashes this winter involving tractor-trailers, commercial trucks and passenger vehicles. While those incidents did not result in serious injuries, authorities said they caused major traffic disruptions and required extensive emergency responses, especially in western New York.

During the one-day detail, troopers issued 535 tickets to both passenger and commercial drivers. Of those, 224, about 42%, were for speeding. Additional violations included Move Over Law offenses, distracted driving, seatbelt infractions and other vehicle and traffic law violations.

Troopers also focused heavily on commercial vehicles. Members of the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit inspected 148 trucks, placing 49 out of service immediately for safety-related issues such as overweight loads or height violations. Sixty commercial drivers were cited after attempting to avoid the inspection checkpoint.

Four drivers were also arrested on DWI charges.

State Police Superintendent Steven G. James said the enforcement effort is part of the agency’s core mission to keep roadways safe.

“Focused enforcement details such as these allow us to proactively respond to specific challenges, educate the public about safe driving, and when necessary, remove unsafe vehicles and motorists from the road,” James said, urging motorists to stay alert, adjust for weather conditions and ensure their vehicles are properly maintained.

The New York State Thruway Authority partnered with State Police during the operation. Executive Director Frank G. Hoare said proper maintenance and safe operation of commercial vehicles is critical to protecting all drivers.

Hoare thanked Troop T for its continued enforcement efforts, calling the partnership essential to keeping the Thruway system safe for both travelers and employees.

Officials said similar enforcement details may continue throughout the remainder of the winter season.
