State Offers Tips to Avoid Wedding Scams Post-Valentine’s Day

With Valentine’s Day behind us, many newly engaged couples are beginning to plan their weddings, and the New York Department of State’s Division of Consumer Protection is reminding couples to stay alert to potential scams. Weddings can be exciting, but coordinating vendors, paying deposits, managing schedules, and handling legal paperwork can also leave couples vulnerable to fraud.

“While this is an exciting time, it often comes with significant expenses and important decisions that can leave consumers vulnerable to scams,” said Secretary of State Walter T. Mosley. “By doing their research, reading contracts carefully, and staying alert to red flags, couples can protect their money and focus on celebrating their big day without the worry of being scammed.”

How to Avoid Wedding Scams

Watch out for social media offers – Personalized ads for wedding products and services may look appealing, but scammers often create fake accounts offering big discounts on items that are of poor quality or never arrive. Always research businesses outside social media and check customer reviews before making purchases. Avoid responding to unsolicited quotes or offers.

Verify vendors – Scammers sometimes pose as photographers, florists, or wedding planners to steal money. They may use fake websites, photos, and testimonials, and request large upfront payments before disappearing. Always research businesses, ask for references, and meet vendors to confirm legitimacy before paying.

Get contracts – Reputable vendors provide contracts outlining all terms of service. Carefully read these documents, ask questions, and keep all agreements in writing to protect yourself and the vendor.

Beware of raffles and phishing scams – “Free” honeymoon offers or prizes you didn’t enter are often scams. Even legitimate bridal expos may use raffles as sales tactics for timeshares or other costly commitments. Avoid high-pressure offers and do not provide personal or financial information unless you are sure the deal is legitimate.

Smart Shopping and Saving Tips

Buy only what you need – Vendors often offer package deals with features you may not want. Ask about flexibility and negotiate to remove unnecessary services for a discount.

Check for extra fees – Always confirm if quotes include taxes, gratuities, or other fees. Hidden costs can quickly push your budget over the limit.

Keep everything in writing – Maintain copies of quotes, contracts, and agreements. Using a dedicated email inbox for wedding planning can help keep your documents organized.

Be flexible – Off-season or weekday weddings can offer substantial savings. Consider non-traditional venues or creative options to stay on budget while focusing on what matters most for your big day.
