A 37-year-old Level 3 sex offender will serve 38 years in prison for separate sexual assaults and lewd acts on the campus of the University of Rochester earlier this year.
Brandon Decapua—already under federal post-release supervision—was convicted by a Monroe County jury on September 11, 2025 of First-degree burglary as a sexually motivated felony; three counts of first-degree sexual abuse; three counts of first-degree attempted rape; and public lewdness
The incidents occurred on January 17. In the first, a 22-year-old student reported being sexually harassed in a campus library: prosecutors say Decapua exposed himself and chased the woman around a table before fleeing.
Approximately three hours later, an 18-year-old student flagged down campus safety officers, reportedly bleeding and distressed. She said a man had assaulted her in the residential hall at Genesee Hall and attempted to violently rape her, at which point she fought him off and escaped.
Authorities located Decapua on campus within minutes of the second report. Records show he was not affiliated with the university.
Monroe County prosecutors called Decapua “a dangerous sexual predator who targeted and terrorized two young women for his own violent and sexual gratification.”
In 2009, Decapua was convicted of possession of child pornography and was given a 10-year state prison sentence, according to New York State Sex Offender Registry records.
“Brandon Decapua is a dangerous sexual predator who targeted and terrorized two young women for his own violent and sexual gratification. Thanks to the bravery of these survivors, this dangerous sex offender will now be sent to the New York State Department of Corrections,” said Assistant District Attorney Sara Vanstrydonck. “This conviction will ensure that Brandon Decapua cannot victimize any more members of our community. This conviction is a powerful reminder that when survivors come forward, we can stop predators and protect our community. I hope that today’s conviction will assist these survivors in their journey to recovery.”
