With Donald Trump securing a second term as president, questions have been raised about the future of the Micron semiconductor manufacturing campus planned for the Town of Clay in Onondaga County.
When asked his thoughts on Micron’s future under a second Trump administration during a Monday visit to Penn Yan, US Senator Chuck Schumer, a Democrat and Senate majority leader, said he’s confident the bipartisan CHIPS Act which made the Micron agreement possible won’t be affected by the Republican takeover of the White House.
“We made the CHIPS Act bipartisan. We have a huge investment here in New York; it’s a blue state. There are huge investments in Ohio and Texas which are red states. The CHIPS Act has always been bipartisan so I believe it will certainly survive.”
Schumer is also urging the semiconductor manufacturer to finalize its agreements before year’s end.
The future of the CHIPS Act and Micron under a Trump presidency was brought into question when Republican Speaker of the House Mike Johnson said Republicans would likely repeal the act if they were to take control of the federal government. Johnson made the remarks while campaigning for fellow Republican Congressman Brandon Williams in Syracuse. Williams lost his reelection bid to represent New York’s 22nd Congressional District on Capitol Hill against Democratic challenger John Mannion.
Micron is expected to create 50,000 jobs in Upstate New York when completed.
