Rochester Hosts Finger Lakes Youth Apprenticeship Signing Day

SHARE NOW

The Finger Lakes Youth Apprenticeship Program (FLYAP) held its 6th annual “Signing Day” at the Edison Career and Technical High School in Rochester. Several students from the school’s manufacturing programs are earning on-the-job experience through paid co-ops and job shadows at local advanced manufacturing companies.

“Team FLYAP is excited to again partner with the students, instructors and administration at Edison Tech to host another great ‘Signing Day’ ceremony,” said Keri Martin, RTMA’s Youth Apprenticeship Coordinator. “Edison is a proud partner of the Finger Lakes Youth Apprenticeship Program from day one, and we look forward to connecting these students to paid co-ops and job shadows at advanced manufacturing companies in our region.”

The Finger Lakes Youth Apprenticeship Program was created in 2018 by the Rochester Technology and Manufacturing Association (RTMA) in partnership with Monroe Community College (MCC). In addition to FLYAP, the RTMA has partnered with Rochester Works to have a full-time “School 2 Work” Youth Navigator at Edison Tech to encourage the school’s underclassmen and undecided students to check out careers and training opportunities in manufacturing and the skilled trades.

Since its inception, FLYAP has connected more than 875 students to nearly 150 businesses throughout the great Rochester and Finger Lakes region. FLYAP students have also earned credit for more than 750 college classes at no cost through the program’s first five years. FLYAP is supported by the RG&E Foundation, Workforce Development Institute and others.

FLYAP previously hosted “Signing Day” ceremonies at the Genesee Valley BOCES – Batavia Campus and Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES/WEMOCO in January and has more planned later this month.
