Rochester General Hospital has been recognized as a Baby-Friendly hospital for the 25th consecutive year, placing it among just eight hospitals nationwide to achieve the milestone.
Rochester Regional Health announced the designation this week, marking a quarter century of adherence to nationally and internationally recognized standards for maternity and newborn care. A ceremony was held at the hospital to celebrate the achievement.
Baby-Friendly USA awards the Baby-Friendly designation following a comprehensive review process. Hospitals must demonstrate compliance with the “Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding,” a set of evidence-based practices recommended by the World Health Organization and UNICEF that promote breastfeeding support, early bonding, and family-centered care.
Eileen FitzPatrick, CEO of Baby-Friendly USA, said maintaining the designation for 25 straight years reflects a sustained commitment by hospital staff to supporting families during critical early moments.
Dr. Suzanne Mullin, chair of pediatrics at Rochester General Hospital, credited the hospital’s care teams for consistently following best practices in maternal and newborn care.
The recognition comes shortly after Rochester General Hospital was named one of the nation’s best hospitals for maternity care by U.S. News & World Report, further highlighting its role in maternal and infant health services.
Rochester General Hospital is one of 52 Baby-Friendly hospitals in New York State. All Rochester Regional Health facilities that offer labor and delivery services currently hold the designation.
