Report: NY Schools Will Not Eliminate DEI Programs

SHARE NOW

The New York State Education Department has informed the federal government it will not eliminate diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs, defying pressure from the Trump administration, which has threatened to withhold federal funding.

In a letter dated Friday, the department stated it sees no legal basis for the federal government to demand the removal of DEI initiatives or to cut funding for noncompliance, citing its interpretation of court rulings.

This follows a recent request from the U.S. Education Department for state K-12 commissioners to certify they are meeting antidiscrimination requirements – including confirming that DEI programs are not used to give preference to one race over another – in order to continue receiving federal funds.
