The commanding officer of State Troopers covering most of Central and Northern New York is out of the job, according to a spokesperson for the New York State Police.
Major Robert Simpson is “no longer the Troop Commander of Troop D,” spokesperson Beau Duffy confirmed to WSYR-NewsChannel 9 in Syracuse. Simpson’s reassignment is pending due to an ongoing administrative investigation.
Simpson, who was promoted to the position in March 2024, served just shy of a full year as commander.

Captain Jason Place has been named acting commander of Troop D, which oversees Herkimer, Jefferson, Lewis, Madison, Oneida, Onondaga, and Oswego counties. Operating from 27 facilities, the men and women of Troop D provide service to 167 towns, 89 villages, and five cities.
