Genesee County will receive $10 million in federal Community Project Funding to support major water and wastewater infrastructure improvements across the county.
Congresswoman Claudia Tenney made the announcement on Tuesday during a press conference in Batavia, saying the funding will go to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for upgrades to the Batavia Water Tower and the countywide water system.
The money will support Genesee County’s federally authorized Section 219 environmental infrastructure project and move forward with the next phase of a countywide water initiative aimed at improving water security and strengthening the system in a region prone to drought.
A key part of the project is the expansion of the VA Water Storage Tank, which currently supplies about 40 percent of the county’s drinking water. The upgrade will increase storage capacity by one million gallons, easing demand on the Batavia Water Treatment Plant, improving public health protections, and reducing limits on future economic development. County officials say the water system is critical to major employers and agricultural operations throughout the area.
“Genesee County recognized the strain on its water system and acted before it became a crisis,” Tenney said. “This $10 million investment moves a long-term plan forward that protects public health, supports local jobs, and ensures our community has the infrastructure needed to grow.”
Tenney added that she will continue working to secure federal funding for infrastructure projects across the 24th Congressional District.
