Recruit NY Recruitment Drive This Weekend

SHARE NOW

This weekend is the Firefighters Association of the State of New York’s (FASNY) annual recruitment drive for emergency responders, Recruit NY.

“This is an amazing chance for people to learn how to get involved and give back to their communities. I have always said our volunteers are the backbone of our rural communities. Volunteer emergency workers always have our backs, and we should have theirs. Whether you are interested in learning more about becoming a volunteer emergency worker or simply want to stop in to say thank you, I encourage everyone to attend,” said Assemblyman Phil Palmesano.

This event is a cornerstone of National Volunteer Month. Volunteer fire departments will provide information about the registration process and membership benefits to prospective recruits. Palmesano also noted the fiscal impact these volunteers have on the region.

“Not only do our brave and dedicated volunteers protect our families and property, but they also protect our property tax dollars. If the services our volunteers provided were paid services, it would cost property taxpayers across our state an extra $4.7 billion in property taxes,” added Palmesano.

There is currently a shortage of volunteers around the state. Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, approximately 30 volunteer ambulance corps have closed, and with 80% of all fire protection services outside of New York City being provided by volunteer departments, the need for volunteers is great.

Prospective participants can call their local fire department to see if they will be participating. You can also call your local emergency management office or visit www.recruitny.org for more information.
