SHARE NOW

Some good news was included in Governor Kathy Hochul’s proposed 2025 budget. The spending plan includes an additional $1 million in state funding for Special Olympics New York.

Statement by President & CEO Stacey Hengsterman:

“Governor Kathy Hochul is the champion Special Olympics New York athletes need her to be.

“The additional $1M in state funding for Special Olympics New York included in the governor’s budget proposal will prevent significant cuts to our signature State Games and enable us to continue recruiting new athletes and families to our life-changing movement. The impact these funds will have in New York communities, schools, and workplaces cannot be overstated.

“Governor Hochul has prioritized support for people with disabilities throughout her leadership. Our athletes are proud to have her as a fan and we are incredibly grateful to have her as a partner. We will not let you down, Governor.”

Special Olympics New York is the largest state chapter in the country, serving more than 42,000 athletes across New York with year-round sports training, athletic competitions, and health screenings. The organization also partners with more than 300 schools statewide to offer Unified Sports, where students with and without disabilities compete as teammates. All Special Olympics New York programs are offered at no cost to athletes, their families, or caregivers. The organization has earned the Platinum Seal of Transparency from GuideStar.com and a four-star rating from Charity Navigator, making it one of the most trusted charities in the business nationally.
