Efforts have been underway in the state legislature to increase the deposit on bottles and cans from $0.05 to $0.10 but how do New Yorkers feel about this?
According to a Siena College Research Institute poll, feelings are mixed with 46% of respondents opposing a deposit increase while 43% support the move. Mirroring the statewide trend, Upstate New Yorkers are split on the issue with 46% of Upstate respondents opposing the change while 42% support it.
State Senator Rachel May’s Bigger Better Bottle Bill (S237B) seeks to not only increase the deposit from $0.05 to $0.10 but also put the deposit on more types of containers such as those holding fruit and vegetable juices, coffee, teas, and ciders. She says the move is necessary to protect the environment and keep redemption centers in business.
New York’s first bottle bill was introduced in 1983.
