Orange Co. Highway Superintendent Accused of Shooting DoorDash Driver

The Highway Superitendent for one Orange County, New York town has been charged with shooting a DoorDash delivery driver who mistakenly came to his home.

According to State Police, on Friday night at about 10 o’clock, the Middletown BCI was notified of a gunshot victim at Garnet Health Medical Center.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the victim was attempting to deliver food to a residence in the Valerie Drive neighborhood of Chester when he became lost and unable to navigate using the app. The victim had approached several homes asking for directions before arriving at the residence of John Reilly III. Reilly told the victim to get off his property, before firing multiple shots at him as he attempted to leave in his vehicle, striking the victim once in the back, causing serious physical injuries.

In addition to being the current Town of Chester Highway Superintendent, Reilly is a federally licensed firearms dealer (FFL).

Reilly was processed at SP Monroe and charged with the following:

  • Assault in the First Degree – Class B Felony
  • Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree – Class C Felony
  • Criminal Possession of a Firearm – Class E Felony

Reilly was arraigned at the Orange County Centralized Arraignment Part and remanded to the Orange County Jail in lieu of $250,000 cash, $500,000 bond, or $750,000 partially secured bond. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 9, at 9:00 a.m. in the Town of Chester Court.

The Bureau of Criminal Investigation is continuing the investigation in coordination with the Orange County District Attorney’s Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).
