An inmate at the Onondaga County Jail has been charged with attempted murder after he allegedly stabbed a jail deputy on Friday.

Onondaga County Sheriff Toby Shelley confirmed the identities of the sheriffs: Sheriff Deputy Erik Francis and Sheriff Deputy David Passino and the inmate to be 37-year-old Jeffrey Tillman from Syracuse.

According to Onondaga County Sheriff Toby Shelley, the incident began when Sheriff Deputy Erik Francis was asking inmate Jeffrey Tillman to return to his cell when the 37-year-old Syracuse resident started to go after Francis with a knife. Tillman allegedly kicked Francis five times, including in the neck, arm and chest.

A second Deputy quickly intervened by pepper spraying Tillman. The second deputy also suffered minor injuries. It was revealed on Saturday that both deputies had been released from the hospital.

Tillman has been in jail since October when he was charged for allegedly stabbing another person.
