NYSAC Reacts to Next Generation 9-1-1 Grant Funding

SHARE NOW

This week, Governor Kathy Hochul announced that “$85 million in grant funding has been allocated to county-level primary Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs) and primary PSAP backup centers to prepare for the implementation of Next Generation 911 (NG911) in 57 counties across the state.  A number of Finger Lakes counties were recipients.

On Friday, New York State Association of Counties President Phil Church released this statement on the funding:

“A county leader’s greatest responsibility is to protect the safety of our residents. Governor Hochul’s $85 million investment in Next Generation 911 is a major step forward in strengthening the backbone of our emergency response systems.

Counties have long advocated for the resources needed to replace outdated emergency communications systems with digital IP-based infrastructure, and today’s announcement reflects how our collective efforts can bring meaningful resources back to our communities.

This investment will help counties modernize emergency services in step with the technologies our residents use every day— whether that means communicating by voice, text, or multimedia — and ensure that every call for help is answered with the speed and precision it deserves.

On behalf of New York’s counties, I thank Governor Hochul for her leadership and commitment to delivering the tools we need to save lives and safeguard our residents.”

NYSAC Executive Director Stephen Acquario said:

“The transition to Next Generation 911 technology will significantly enhance our counties’ ability to respond quickly and effectively to emergencies. This $85 million commitment ensures that New York’s counties can implement the digital infrastructure needed to improve response times, enhance caller location accuracy, and ultimately save more lives. We appreciate Governor Hochul’s leadership in preparing our state for the future of emergency communications.”
