The Great New York State Fair will roll out a new Fairgrounds Alert System at this year’s event, offering real-time updates on weather, security, and other important information via text message.
Fairgoers can subscribe by texting NYSF to 888777. The system will be active during the 13-day fair, which runs from August 20 through Labor Day, September 1, as well as during year-round events at the fairgrounds.
Fair Director Julie LaFave said the initiative is part of ongoing efforts to keep the event safe and family-friendly. “The safety and well-being of everyone who visits the Fairgrounds is our top priority,” LaFave said, noting the new alert system will work alongside other security measures.
The system integrates with the National Weather Service for advanced severe weather alerts. Other new safety steps include banning non-official vehicles from parades and adding more physical security measures.
Over the years, the Fair has invested in high-tech security tools such as magnetometers, metal detectors, high-resolution surveillance cameras, drones, and an advanced public address system. Public safety agencies staff the grounds around the clock, and the Fair works closely with local, state, and federal law enforcement, including the New York State Police and Department of Homeland Security.
Medical and emergency support will also be in place, with American Medical Response providing ambulances, bike and foot patrols, and utility task vehicle units. Upstate Medical University physicians and nurses will staff the onsite infirmary daily, and the Solvay Fire Department will operate a 24/7 fire station.
Fairgoers can also take advantage of misting stations and free water refills at most buildings.
