New Yorkers are invited to take part in the state’s 13th annual First Day Hikes program.
The event offers residents across the Empire State the chance to ring in the New Year at state parks, trails, and historic sites. In the Fingerlakes, you can enjoy hikes at Seneca Lake State Park, Taughannock Falls, and the Montezuma Audubon Center.
“New York’s public lands are something to behold. We lead the nation on State public lands, and we house the nation’s oldest state park. As New York State Parks celebrates its Centennial next year, our First Day Hikes is the first of many celebratory events,” Governor Hochul said. “I invite all New Yorkers to begin the New Year by experiencing New York’s beautiful landscapes and enjoying the environmental and cultural legacy we call home.”
First Day Hikes was originally started in Massachusetts in 1992 before becoming a national event.
According to New York’s estimates, 2022 was a record-breaking year for the state’s recreation areas. 79.5 million people visited the over 250 historical sites, golf courses, etc overseen by The Officer of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation.
A full list of participating location in New York can be found on the state’s website.
