The majority of New Yorkers are against housing migrants in SUNY dorms.
According to a Siena College Research Institute poll conducted on 817 registered voters, 54% of those surveyed said they didn’t want the college facilities being used to temporarily house migrants, compared to 33% in favor. Over three-quarters of Republicans responded negatively to the idea floated by Governor Kathy Hochul while Democrats appeared to be split down the middle.
When asked whether migrants should be moved outside of New York City, if the city pays for the housing, opposition fell to 46% with, 40% supporting it. The support largely came from Democrats and people in the city, while Republicans, those from Upstate, and Downstate suburbanites were against it.
After many municipalities declared states of emergency to prevent migrants from being sent Upstate, including Cayuga and Schuyler Counties, New York City filed a lawsuit against them.
