New York State will hold its last Free Fishing Day of 2025 on Tuesday in observance of Veterans Day. On Free Fishing Days, anglers can fish in the state’s freshwater waters without a license, though all other fishing regulations remain in effect.

Governor Kathy Hochul encouraged residents to take advantage of the opportunity to enjoy New York’s outdoors while honoring veterans. “Fall is a great time of year to fish in New York’s pristine waters while honoring a veteran in your life,” she said. “I encourage New Yorkers to get offline and get outside on this free fishing day to enjoy an affordable outdoor recreation opportunity and reflect on the freedoms we have thanks to our veterans.”

The state also offers additional options for veterans and active-duty military members to fish for free or at a reduced cost. Certain resident veterans and active-duty service members may be eligible for free or discounted fishing licenses of 40 percent or more.

DEC Commissioner Amanda Lefton said the free fishing day provides an opportunity for families and friends to enjoy New York’s natural environment and explore its lakes, streams, and ponds. She added that it’s also a chance to introduce newcomers to the sport or try out a new fishing location.
