NY Tax Department Reminds Residents of April 15 Filing Deadline

With the personal income tax deadline approaching, the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance is reminding residents that a range of online tools are available to make filing returns simple, fast, and free for many taxpayers.

The deadline to file state income tax returns, pay any taxes owed, or request an extension is midnight on April 15, 2026.

“With just under one month left until the tax filing deadline, taxpayers still have plenty of time to file,” said Acting Commissioner Amanda Hiller. “The resources available at www.tax.ny.gov can help taxpayers quickly and easily meet their filing obligations and receive any refunds they’re owed.”

Officials encourage taxpayers to visit the department’s website to access its Income Tax Filing Season Resource Center, which provides step-by-step guidance on preparing and submitting returns.

What You Need to File

Taxpayers are advised to gather key documents before starting the filing process. These include Social Security numbers and birth dates for all filers and dependents, income documents such as W-2s and 1099 forms, unemployment statements if applicable, and records of any tax credits being claimed. Banking information is also needed for direct deposit of refunds.

Free Filing Options Available

The department continues to promote e-filing as the safest and fastest way to submit returns. Taxpayers who file electronically and choose direct deposit typically receive refunds more quickly and avoid delays associated with mailed checks.

Many New Yorkers may qualify to file their returns for free through the state’s Free File program or other no-cost options listed on the department’s website. Additional assistance may also be available through the GetYourRefund program.

Help for Eligible Taxpayers

Residents with a federal adjusted gross income of $89,000 or less and investment income under $11,950 may qualify for the Taxpayer Assistance Program. Through this program, certified staff guide participants through preparing and filing their federal and state returns at no cost, either in person or virtually.

Avoiding Tax Preparer Scams

Officials also urge taxpayers to use caution when hiring a tax preparer. While most are reputable, the department warns that some may attempt to take advantage of clients. Taxpayers are encouraged to review the New York State Consumer Bill of Rights Regarding Tax Preparers and verify credentials before hiring assistance.

Track Your Refund

After filing, taxpayers can monitor the status of their refund at any time using the “Check Your Refund” tool available on the department’s website.
