On Monday, restaurant workers from across New York State will gather at the Capitol in Albany to launch the campaign for A1200 & S415-A One Fair Wage legislation that supports say would end New York’s “archaic” two-tier wage system for tipped workers, who currently earn $10.35-$11.00 per hour before tips.
A1200 would provide for minimum wage requirements for miscellaneous industry workers while S415 establishes a one-fair wage reimbursement credit.
The bills, sponsored by Assemblywoman Jessica González-Rojas and State Senator Robert Jackson, would require employers to pay tipped workers a full minimum wage with tips on top, benefiting hundreds of thousands of workers across the state by ensuring fair pay, reducing their reliance on unpredictable tips, and addressing what they say are “systemic inequities that disproportionately impact women and workers of color.”
Organizers say this campaign launch will hold lawmakers accountable, compelling them to declare their stance: Will they stand with workers or with corporate interests?
