NY Officials Warn Consumers About Package Theft During the Holiday Season

SHARE NOW

As holiday shopping ramps up, the New York Department of State’s Division of Consumer Protection is warning residents to stay vigilant against package theft and sharing tips to protect their deliveries.

According to the National Retail Federation, online shopping during the five-day holiday weekend from Thanksgiving to Cyber Monday increased 9% compared to last year. While convenient for consumers, the surge also increases the risk of stolen packages. The U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General reports that at least 58 million packages were stolen nationwide in 2024, resulting in roughly $16 billion in losses.

“Many consumers have already started or even finished their online holiday shopping,” said Secretary of State Walter T. Mosley. “While you’re getting ready to spread holiday cheer, thieves may be trying to take advantage. Make sure you’re taking added precautions and keeping track of your packages to prevent them from being stolen.”

New York State Police Superintendent Steven G. James added, “Stealing a package takes only seconds and can leave the victim with frustration and unexpected financial difficulty. By using tracking, alternative delivery methods like store pickups or lockers, and staying vigilant, you can better protect your purchases.”

Tips to Prevent Package Theft and Identity Theft

  • Keep track of your packages: Use real-time tracking and alerts to monitor deliveries. Retrieve packages as soon as they arrive.
  • Schedule deliveries when someone is home: Many retailers allow specific delivery windows. Be present to receive your packages.
  • Ask a neighbor for help: Have a trusted neighbor accept deliveries if you won’t be home.
  • Use security or doorbell cameras: Cameras help monitor deliveries and provide evidence if theft occurs.
  • Ship to store or alternative pickup locations: Pick up items at a store or delivery partner location instead of having them left at your door.
  • Consider package lockers or lockboxes: Services like LockerNYC offer secure pickup options in many areas.
  • Require a signature for delivery: Especially for high-value items, this prevents unattended deliveries.
  • Verify delivery notifications: Always confirm messages through official company portals. Beware of unsolicited calls or texts.
  • Watch for phishing attempts: Scammers may impersonate delivery companies or retailers. Do not click suspicious links or provide personal information.
  • Report stolen packages immediately: Contact the retailer quickly to request a refund or replacement.

By following these precautions, New York residents can help ensure their holiday packages arrive safely and reduce the risk of theft or identity fraud.
