NY Marks 50 Years of Child Support Program During Awareness Month

SHARE NOW

August is Child Support Awareness Month in New York State, and this year marks the 50th anniversary of the state’s Child Support Program.

Governor Kathy Hochul issued a proclamation recognizing the milestone, highlighting the program’s role in helping families secure financial and medical support for their children. Since its creation, the program has collected more than $50 billion on behalf of families and now serves nearly 536,000 children across the state, collecting more than $1.6 billion each year.

Barbara C. Guinn, commissioner of the Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance, said the anniversary is a chance to celebrate progress while looking ahead. She noted that new online enrollment tools are making access easier than ever for parents.

The program is overseen by the state and administered by local social services departments in all 57 counties and New York City. Hochul’s proclamation also praised child support professionals for their dedication to children and families.
