NY Launches “Take a Pause” Mobile Sports Betting Campaign

The New York State Office of Addiction Services and Supports (OASAS) announced the launch of “Take a Pause,” a new PSA campaign highlighting the steps New Yorkers can take to understand the risks and ensure responsible gambling, in particular for those who participate in mobile sports betting. The campaign also includes information about where people can find help for themselves or a loved one impacted by, or at risk of developing a gambling problem. The first ad from the campaign is now airing across the state and can be viewed here.

“Gambling is considered a hidden addiction because there are no outward signs that someone may be experiencing a problem, but it can be just as devastating as an addiction to substances,” OASAS Commissioner Dr. Chinazo Cunningham said. “This new campaign urges New Yorkers to take a look at how much time and money they are spending gambling and to seek help if it seems they’ve lost control.”

The “Take a Pause” campaign invites New Yorkers to examine their gambling behavior and the impact it may be having on their lives and personal relationships. Individuals are invited to take a survey to see if their wagering is something to be concerned about and can receive feedback on whether their gambling may be a problem, as well as additional support and resources, including information on where to find help. Both the new PSA and the survey are available in English and Spanish.

As part of the ongoing efforts to provide problem gambling support alongside this campaign, OASAS has also partnered with GamFin to provide free financial counseling and support for anyone in New York State who is experiencing financial challenges related to gambling. More information on how to access this help is available here.

New York State offers a strong continuum of gambling services, ensuring that all New Yorkers have access to important support and resources. OASAS oversees providers that offer both inpatient and outpatient treatment services for gambling, and we regularly work with our provider network on training and educational efforts to further enhance these services.

OASAS-operated Addiction Treatment Centers also provide treatment for gambling addiction. Regional Problem Gambling Resource Centers (PGRCs), which are funded by OASAS and operated by the New York Council on Problem Gambling, provide resources including information and training. These centers are available in every region of the state.

Last year, the agency significantly expanded its efforts in problem gambling prevention, community awareness, treatment, harm reduction, and recovery services across the state. More information about problem gambling services and support in New York State is available here.
