A bill to delay special elections in New York was killed by Democrats on Monday, just before it was set for debate.
The proposal would have allowed Gov. Kathy Hochul to postpone special elections until November, potentially leaving Rep. Elise Stefanik’s congressional seat vacant if she becomes the next U.N. ambassador.
Supporters cited low voter turnout in special elections as a reason for the delay.
