More than 8 million New Yorkers will begin receiving one-time inflation relief checks starting mid-October, aimed at easing the financial strain caused by rising costs.
The payments, funded by the state, are designed to return a portion of inflated sales taxes already paid by residents. According to the Department of Taxation and Finance, eligible recipients will be identified automatically based on information from their previously filed tax returns—no application is necessary.
Checks will be mailed out in batches over several weeks due to the volume of payments. There will be no set mailing schedule based on zip code or region, and unlike prior refunds that may have been direct deposited, these will arrive as physical checks labeled from the “Tax Department of Inflation Payment.”
