New York Reminds Taxpayers About Free Filing Options

SHARE NOW

The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance is reminding residents that free software options are available to help qualifying taxpayers file their federal and state income tax returns quickly and at no cost.

Officials say taxpayers can use the state’s Free File program to electronically submit their returns without paying the fees that sometimes come with commercial tax preparation software. The deadline to file 2025 tax returns, pay any taxes owed, or request an extension is midnight on April 15, 2026.

“Too often, taxpayers who use commercial tax preparation software are surprised by charges for additional fees while completing their annual filing,” said Acting Commissioner Amanda Hiller. “For a truly free experience, visit the New York State Tax Department website, where there are no added costs or hidden fees.”

Taxpayers are encouraged to review eligibility requirements for each participating software provider to determine which free filing option is right for them. Information about the Free File program is also available in multiple languages.

Other Free Filing Options

Residents who do not qualify for Free File may still be eligible for other no-cost electronic filing options offered through the state.

Additionally, some taxpayers can receive assistance through the department’s Taxpayer Assistance Program. Those with a federal adjusted gross income of $89,000 or less and investment income of $11,950 or less may qualify for in-person or virtual help from certified Tax Department staff.

During these sessions, eligible taxpayers are guided through preparing and electronically filing their own basic federal and state returns at no cost.

Preparing to File

State officials recommend taxpayers gather important documents—such as income statements and deduction records—before starting their return. Additional resources, tools, and information about filing options are available through the Tax Department’s online income tax filing resource center.

Taxpayers can also track the status of their refund through the department’s website after filing.
