New York Ramps Up Thanksgiving DWI Patrols

SHARE NOW

New York will ramp up impaired- and reckless-driving enforcement from Nov. 22–30 as holiday travel surges, Governor Kathy Hochul announced. State Police and local agencies will add sobriety checkpoints, extra patrols and unmarked vehicles targeting distracted driving and Move Over Law violations.

Hochul urged motorists to “stay alert, stay sober and move over,” noting that last Thanksgiving police statewide made more than 1,700 impaired-driving arrests and issued over 10,000 speeding tickets.

To help ease travel, the state will suspend most highway construction lane closures from 6 a.m. November 26 through 6 a.m. December 1, though some work may continue behind barriers or for emergencies.

All 27 Thruway service areas are open for holiday travel, and motorists are encouraged to use the Thruway and 511NY apps for traffic updates, camera feeds and navigation alerts. The STOP-DWI “Have a Plan” app also offers quick access to taxis and rideshares and information on DWI laws.

Law enforcement agencies statewide said they will be out in force and urged drivers to travel safely as families head out for the holiday.
