New York Gas Prices Continue to Trend Lower to Start 2026

SHARE NOW

Gas prices across New York State continued to edge lower this week, according to AAA Western and Central New York, giving drivers some relief as the new year begins.

AAA reports the statewide average price for a gallon of regular gasoline in New York is now $3.03, down two cents from last Monday and ten cents lower than this time last year, when the average stood at $3.13.

AAA Western and Central New York says prices across the region are mixed but mostly down:

  • Batavia — $3.07, down 2 cents
  • Buffalo — $3.11, down 2 cents
  • Elmira — $2.86, down 3 cents
  • Ithaca — $3.19, up 1 cent
  • Rochester — $3.11, down 2 cents
  • Rome — $3.12, down 1 cent
  • Syracuse — $3.02, no change
  • Watertown — $3.05, down 3 cents

For comparison, the national average for a gallon of regular gasoline is $2.81, down two cents from last week and 25 cents lower than one year ago.

AAA says strong fuel supplies, the seasonal switch to cheaper winter-blend gasoline, and lower oil prices are all contributing to the downward pressure at the pump. Oil prices are currently trading in the mid-$50 to $60 per barrel range, and despite recent events in Venezuela, there has been little impact on global oil markets.

The drop in prices comes even after a busy holiday travel period. AAA estimates that more than 109 million Americans drove at least 50 miles from home between December 20 and January 1. Despite that surge in demand, gas prices continued to fall into early January.

Diesel prices are also declining. The national average price for diesel is now $3.52, down three cents from last week, while the New York average is $3.87, down two cents.

AAA says if current trends continue, drivers should see gas prices remain relatively stable and below the $3 per gallon mark nationally in the coming weeks, with New York prices continuing to track slightly above the national average.
