More than five years after the COVID-19 pandemic first shut down New York, the state is officially ending its requirement for employers to provide paid sick leave related to the virus.
According to the state’s website, COVID-19 quarantine leave will expire today. The policy, enacted in March 2020, guaranteed five to 14 days of job-protected paid leave for workers required to isolate due to COVID-19. The legislation was put in place during the height of the pandemic, as New York City recorded over 203,000 confirmed cases in just the first three months, according to CDC data.
With the expiration of the policy, employers will no longer be mandated to offer paid leave specifically tied to COVID-related isolation beginning August 1.
