Chief Administrative Judge Joseph A. Zayas and First Deputy Chief Administrative Judge Norman St. George have designated Tuesday, September 30, as the Unified Court System’s (UCS) first annual New York State Court Interpreter Recognition Day. Events will be held across judicial districts in all 62 counties to honor the critical role court interpreters play in the justice system.

“This special day marks the culmination of a month-long campaign highlighting court interpreters’ essential role in safeguarding due process and advancing access to justice,” said Judge Zayas. “In courtrooms across New York—urban, suburban, and rural—interpreters work tirelessly to ensure clear communication for individuals with limited English proficiency or hearing impairments, improving engagement and outcomes in civil, criminal, and family matters.”

Judge St. George added, “Each year, UCS interpreters provide language services to nearly 500,000 litigants and other court users. With New York’s linguistic diversity, the need for interpreters has never been greater. We thank our interpreters for their invaluable contributions and encourage bilingual and multilingual students to explore this meaningful career path and current opportunities within the state courts.”
