New York State has begun sending inflation refund checks of up to $400 to approximately 8.2 million households statewide. Mailings started today and are expected to continue through October and November. Eligible residents do not need to apply or take any action to receive a check.
The refunds are part of a state initiative aimed at helping residents manage the rising costs of living. Eligibility is based on income reported on 2023 state tax returns:
- Joint filers with income up to $150,000 will receive $400; those earning between $150,001 and $300,000 will receive $300.
- Single filers with income up to $75,000 will receive $200; those earning between $75,001 and $150,000 will receive $150.
There are no age restrictions, and individuals cannot be claimed as a dependent on another taxpayer’s return.
According to the state, the payments are funded by increased sales tax revenue and are intended to provide households with relief for everyday expenses or unexpected costs.
