A new exhibit showcasing letters exchanged between New York veterans and their loved ones during the Vietnam War is now open in Albany. “Mail Call: Letters From/To Vietnam” is described as the “profoundly personal correspondences reveal stories of service, sacrifice, and the enduring connection between those on the front lines and those waiting at home.”

The exhibit is located in the Vietnam Memorial and Gallery in the Robert Abrams Justice Building at Empire State Plaza in Albany, New York.

“This exhibition offers an intimate perspective of New York veterans and their loved ones’ experiences during the Vietnam War,” New York State Office of General Services (OGS) Commissioner Jeanette Moy said. “As a commemorative partner of the United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration, OGS had the distinct honor of curating this display at the Empire State Plaza’s Vietnam Memorial Gallery. I want to thank our brave veterans, their relatives, and their friends for entrusting us with their stories and our partners at the NYS Department of Veterans’ Services for their support.”

The exhibition marks 50 years since U.S. troops withdrew from Vietnam, ending more than a decade of conflict. The letters on display – sent by sons, daughters, siblings, and parents – capture raw emotion, offer comfort, and deliver tragic news. They reveal personal stories of courage, loss, and resilience while honoring the New Yorkers who served and shedding light on the human cost of war.

The exhibition’s opening reception took place at the Empire State Plaza on Thursday, May 15, 2025, with remarks from representatives of the Office of General Services, NYS Department of Veterans’ Services, and special guest, Colonel Tom, who presented lapel pins to Vietnam veterans attending the opening.

About the New York State Vietnam Memorial and Gallery

The New York State Vietnam Memorial and Gallery honors the military service of New York State residents who served their country in Southeast Asia. The memorial was created by legislation in 1981 and was officially dedicated on May 26, 1984, by Governor Mario Cuomo, and was the first such state effort in the nation. The memorial includes a courtyard with a state honor roll on four bronze panels and an exhibition gallery.

It was created as a “living memorial” with an exhibition gallery designed to foster increased public understanding and discussion of the Vietnam War and its aftermath through changing exhibitions, educational programs, special events, and interaction with other agencies and veterans’ organizations.
